Theory classes provide an important supplement to piano lessons and help students learn to understand their music and the words musicains use to describe them.
Theory at RR Academy is offered in both in-person and online settings.
We offer private, semi-private, and group theory classes.
All theory courses feature live instruction and are taught in accordance with the syllabus requirements of the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Group Theory:
RR Academy offers various group theory classes that run year-round and meet weekly.
All students receive individual attention while benefiting from supportive collaboration with their classmates. Homework is assigned weekly and marked regularly in class.
All group classes meet online via Zoom.
Group class tuition is due in full on May 15th, 2026. Classes are non-refundable.
Semi-Private Theory:
Semi-private classes are offered year-round and require a minimum of two people. Scheduling is arranged according to the convenience of both parties.
Time Commitment:
All classes meet weekly, unless otherwise specified in the syllabus. Private, semi-private, and group lasses last anywhere from 55min to 1hr 55min in length, depending on the level. All classes Level 9 and above are 1hr and 25 min in length minimum.
On average, students can expect anywhere between 30min and 3 hours of homework a week, depending on the course chosen.
Age Requirements:
Although there is no minimum age for theory lessons, it is recommended that students begin their theory studies alongside their instrumental studies.
Until the age of 6, elementary theory concepts will usually be covered briefly within piano lessons. It is recommended that all students registered in RCM Level 2 piano and beyond take theory lessons. Students studying theory continuously alongside their instrumentla studies generally move quicker through both their piano studies and the RCM curriculum overall.
